Another of the compelling Twilight Zone political dramas, Season One, Episode 22, "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street," from Spring, 1960, and it stands the test of time for how political paranoia works on a neighborhood of the like-minded. The commonplace people of Maple Street see a meteor flash overhead; all the electricity goes out; a small boy tells the story of how the monsters landed just like this; and soon everyone suspects everyone else as being the invaders. Glorious. "I know who the monster is!" shouts the accused. And then the leap of faith into total hysteria and the twist. The question is, how does this not carefully describe the wireless national security state we live in with an affection for gold, survivalism, scapegoating, alien-mongering and fear of Dick Cheney.
