Cicadas humming (not the seventeen-year locusts), birds, dappled light. Wasps look for a place to lay eggs; daddy-long-legs, cave cricket. forest floor: leaf litter from the year before in infinite shadings of brown; the perfume of humus. Japanese say, "forest bath." Richard Dawkins, of he reductionist notion that everything can be reduced to the movement of atoms, electrons; also a campaigning atheist asserverating that all that exists is the material world. Haskell says he has a strong suspicion that there's more here than just atoms moving around. Haskell – b. England, raised in Paris, now a scholar in Tennessee. In the last Ice Age, much of North America was scoured by glaciers, but they stopped before reaching Tennessee, so there wasn't a sudden cessation and renewal there; the natural world is consequently many thousands of years older than in the north. Mandala – Tibetan sand-panting – as simile for this part of the forest floor.
