Monday 15 May 2017 / Hour 1, Block D: Eli Lake, Bloomberg View, in re: Middle Eastern politics, broad swath.  Abbas doesn’t enjoy any control over Gaza, is at the end of his life. Plays to extremism because he’s lost popularity among his own people.   Netanyahyu has the most right-wing coalition in modern Israeli history but his policies are more moderate.  Trump probably would like to achieve some small acknowledgement that peace can be achieved (somehow).   Ron Lauder has a direct line to Pres Trump, has told the president that there’s a great opening for Palestinian-Israeli negotiations now; this runs counter to everything I know and has gummed up the policy. McMaster speaking of “self-determination”[an ideational leftover from Woodrow Wilson]: not to worry ‘ McMaster has a strained relationship with Pres Trump.

Totally adorable children. When Russians bombed Georgia, first they bombed the airfield.  In 1994 electricity was often off. Today, Tbilisi is resurgent. Beautiful hotels, shops, airport; many tourists.  Jews in Georgia are curious about their family history and traditions.
