Image: Sun Tzu [pron approx: sooon tzuh] in Chinese characters.  The first one is ancient writing. The second is contemporary traditional writing, such as is practiced in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and among educated Chinese people the world around.  The third version is in a painfully truncated script issued under Mao Tse-tung, designed to let hundreds of millions people learn to read and write quickly. While this was partially achieved, it stripped from Chinese culture and public knowledge much that is central to knowledge of history, poetry, language.  This loss is incalculable and cannot be restored absent the traditional characters.
