Dr. Mark A. Israel, a pediatric oncologist, translational scientist and a nationally recognized leader in cancer research, has been appointed National Executive Director of the Israel Cancer Research Fund (ICRF), the largest nonprofit organization dedicated solely to funding cancer research in Israel. Dr. Israel joins ICRF from the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College, where he is a professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Medicine, and Molecular and Systems Biology. From 2001 to 2016, Dr. Israel served as the Director of Dartmouth’s National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Norris Cotton Cancer Center, where he was responsible for delivering comprehensive clinical care to more than 30,000 patients annually. Dr. Israel organized Dartmouth’s cancer research efforts with an annual budget in excess of $50 million and oversaw the cancer center’s development efforts, raising as much as $10 million annually.
Thursday 11 October 2018 / Hour 2, Block C: Hanin Ghaddar, Washington Institute; in re: Lebanon: any good news? Sadly, no. Hezbollah won parliamentary elections in May, then ensured that all opponents were extremely weak. We see sanctions on Hezbollah, but they're a cash economy, so there’s little effect. Also, Lebanon is on the verge of economic collapse; and in any case the economy is overwhelmed with corruption. The only slight beam of light is that a poor economy tends to limit Hezbollah’s activities. Exposing the missile factories and rocket rooms in residences has made an impression on civilians, especially Shi’a. People want no more war; do not want Hezbollah to put them in danger again. What's scaring people is that Netanyahu said: These facilities are to convert weapons — and everyone knows that for Israel this is a red line. Need more exposure by the international community, would cause people to ask questions, and start to exercise control over what’s under their houses. There’s a huge gap between the people and the [leadership]. The govt is weak and no one expects Hariri or anyone to do anything.
Iranians are everywhere – tourists or just present. Media are run by Iranians. See Iranians (esp IRGC), Iraqis, Pakistanis. In Beirut’s southern suburbs, everywhere; they run institutions, won't allow Hezbollah to have that much control. The wounded are first moved to Damascus hospitals, then on to Lebanon. Iran manages two big hospitals. Want to give a message to the fighting force: if you fight with us, we’ll take good care of you.

Hanin Ghaddar is the inaugural Friedmann Visiting Fellow at The Washington Institute's Geduld Program on Arab Politics, where she focusses on Shi’a politics throughout the Levant. The longtime managing editor of Lebanon's NOW news website, Ghaddar shed light on a broad range of cutting-edge issues, from the evolution of Hezbollah inside Lebanon's fractured political system to Iran's growing influence throughout the Middle East. Prior to joining NOW in 2007, Ghaddar wrote for the Lebanese newspapers As-Safir, An-Nahar, and Al-Hayat, and also worked as a researcher for the United Nations Development Program regional office. A native of Al-Ghazieh, Lebanon, Ghaddar holds a Bachelor's degree in English literature and a Master's degree in Middle East studies, both from the American University of Beirut.
Thursday 11 October 2018 / Hour 2, Block D: Ilan Berman, American Foreign Policy Council; in re: China and Russia. How does Russia benefit from being a prankster at best, a saboteur at worst? They feel as though they're in a box; is constantly testing the contours of the box. Looking for weaknesses; when they find one, they act as both arsonist and firefighter. Russia takes control of the F300 in Syria away from Iran and into Syrian hands. If it malfunctions, Russia can always claim user error. Now India is buying the F300, and Turkey thinking of doing so. As it becomes more of an export commodity, the integrity of the system will be tested in many ways. A level of plausible deniability. Xinjiang, a major story; massive, police, sate-controlled crackdown – forbidden to practice religion or wear a beard; “re-education” programs.
