JOHN BATCHELOR SHOW

Hour One
Tuesday 26 November  2019 / Hour 1, Block A:  Chris Riegel, Scala.com CEO, in re:  France turns in tax wrath on US firms: Google, Amazon, et al.  Another shoot-self-in-foot French anti-entrepreneurial battle.  Are you running a business in France? Quick – become a Manxman.  Gilets jaunes are also angry at the lack of opportunity in France.
Tuesday 26 November  2019 / Hour 1, Block B:   Chris Riegel, Scala.com CEO, in re:  For the first time in seven years, a decline in high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth individuals, esp in in China. Money moving out of China to Canada, and a whole shift in business to Singapore. China is in the bottom of the first inning in development.  Seventy-five per cent among the HNW.  Growing tide in global risk. In Europe: a continuing, soft war on entrepreneurialism; smart people move to the US or East Asia.  Cracks under EU taxation and regulation. Chase the best possible returns, no longer in Europe.
Tuesday 26 November  2019 / Hour 1, Block C:   Chris Riegel, Scala.com CEO, in re:  The future of the US economy.   Foxconn pledged to build a sizable mfrg facility in Wisconsin. The Wall Street Journal said little has been done there. Terry Gao, Foxconn boss, is exploring being a presidential candidate in Taiwan; digital firms are attractive because they make large investments — maybe $15 bil — then have twenty-year lifespans or more.  Fox conn says it's invested in roads and the like.   This is power politics and business politics intertwined. It originally was going to be A Gen 10 plant, now suddenly scaled back to a Gen 6 plant. Watch Corning, the glass supplier! Corning has just said it will not build a plant in Wisconsin, so the whole thing looks unlikely.
Amazon was booted out of Long Island City by the genius AOC and her posse, but it still is hiring a lot of New Yorkers.
Tuesday 26 November  2019 / Hour 1, Block D:  Chris Riegel, Scala.com CEO, in re:  Schumpeter, Economist columnist, says that REITs are a great investment, pay large dividends. Huge digifirms are buying up abandoned malls and setting up distribution centers. “Life finds a way” – transforms here to “capitalism finds a way.”  Shopping mall sites have all the physical infrastructure, so Amazon builds centers thereon. REITs can move at the speed of tech. Walmart or Kroger has 30 boxes of Tide on a shelf – whereas Amazon needn’t do that.
