WONDER LAND
By Daniel Henninger
Admiring a demagogue because he looks 'decisive' is dangerous.

Friday  28 March  2014 / Hour 1, Block B: KORI SCHAKE, HOOVER. One of the consequences of having a volunteer military, and a relatively small one at that, is that few Americans any longer have experience of war. The United States armed forces ended conscription in 1973; we are now two full generations from the expectation by young men that they would serve. Ending the draft substantially improved our fighting force, but it also allowed us to separate ourselves from the experiences of those who fight for our country. For the past thirteen years, we have been a military at war, but most Americans have been little affected by it. Few Americans have much understanding of what the experience of combat is like, whether and how soldiers, sailors, airmen, coast guardsmen, and Marines think about the killing we rely on them to do for us, how they come to terms with their actions and the consequences of those actions…

Friday  28 March  2014 / Hour 1, Block C: COLUM LYNCH, FOREIGN POLICY. "Drawing on a massive trove of highly confidential UNAMID documents -- including thousands of pages of emails, police reports, internal investigations and diplomatic cables -- Foreign Policy will over the next three days publish a series of articles that shed light on how Darfur's combatants, particularly the Sudanese government, have effectively neutered the U.N. peacekeeping mission, undermining its capacity to fulfill its primary duty to protect nearly 2 million civilians displaced by Sudan's genocide. During the past year alone, more than 500,000 terrified men, women, and children have poured into the region's already overcrowded refugee camps." Read the rest of Colum's incredible tale here.

Some high-tech treatments help patients better control chronic diseases like diabetes, but they also drive an enormous surge in costs, and experts say many of them offer dubious benefits.

Friday  28 March  2014 / Hour 3, Block B: “Ashen Truths” (a global net assessment): Extended course description April 10, 2014

“Ashen Truths” (a global net assessment): Tracking and Bounding Future World Crisis “Net Assessment” began during the Cold War as a threat-based “framework for analyzing the national security strategy of the United States.” Yet the idea of a holistic approach to strategic threats transports well to other “big” challenges. Perhaps the biggest challenge we face is read more…

Friday  28 March  2014 / Hour 3, Block C:  TIM ALBERTA, NATIONAL JOURNAL..  Several dozen frustrated House conservatives are scheming to infiltrate the GOP leadership next year—possibly by forcing  House Speaker John Boehner to step aside immediately after November's midterm elections, reports National Journal Congressional Leadership Correspondent Tim Alberta. He reports that behind closed doors there are several options on the table:

Some Say [the conservatives' exasperation with leadership is] enough to coalesce behind—and start whipping votes for—a single conservative leadership candidate. Others want to cut a deal with Majority Leader Eric Cantor: We'll back you for speaker if you promise to bring aboard a conservative lieutenant.

But there's a more audacious option on the table, according to conservatives involved in the deliberations. They say between 40 and 50 members have already committed verbally to electing a new speaker. If those numbers hold, organizers say, they could force Boehner to step aside as speaker in late November, when the incoming GOP conference meets for the first time, by showing him that he won't have the votes to be reelected in January.

The masterminds of this mutiny are trying to stay in the shadows for as long as possible to avoid putting a target on their backs. But one Republican said the "nucleus"of the rebellion can be found inside the House Liberty Caucus, of which he and his comrades are members. This is not surprising, considering that some of the key players in that group—Justin Amash of Michigan, Raul Labrador of Idaho, and Thomas Massie of Kentucky—were among the 12 Republicans who refused to back Boehner's reelection in January 2013.
