Picture, above: In the Orthodox midnight Easter liturgy, the service continues till midnight, when the church is kept dark and it's held that Jesus arises from death.  A flame from the altar is used to light candles held by parishioners, who pass the light on throughout the church. Then begins a procession out the doors of the church and around it, back into the church for the rest of the liturgy.

At the moment of the arising, a call goes out, "Christ is risen"! The response is, "Truly, he is risen!"  Joy fills the church.

Church Slavonic (Old high Russian church language):  Хрїстóсъ воскрéсе! Воистину воскресе! (Christos voskrese! Voistinu voskrese!)

Russian: Христос воскрес! Воистину воскрес! (Christos voskres! Voistinu voskres!)

Old English: Crist aras! Crist soþlice aras! (Lit: Christ arose! Christ surely arose!)
