Photo, above: Cato and Republican Liberty  This image comes from the 1713 first edition of Joseph Addison's play Cato. A Tragedy, which was highly influential in the decades leading up to the American Revolution with its story of the courageous Cato the Younger defying Julius Caesar and choosing suicide over surrender. Liberty Fund has recently republished this classic work, which can be found online here. Marcus Porcius Cato Uticensis (95 BC, Rome – April 46 BC, Utica), commonly known as Cato the Younger (Cato Minor) to distinguish him from his great-grandfather Cato the Elder, was a politician and statesman in the late Roman Republic, and a follower of the Stoic philosophy.
